First Songs You've Heard

Postby Quaintly » Fri Jan 15, 2010 4:32 am

There are various separate threads about what your favourite song is on each album, so I thought there should be one for the "first songs" you've ever heard from Sarah Blasko.

1. What was the first song you've ever heard?
2. Which was the first song you absolutely fell in love with?
3. Which song did you first not like but it then totally grew on you?
4. Which song did you not like and still don't like?
5. What's your all-time favourite song?

You can answer this for each CD too, if you like.

My answers:
1. "Don't U Eva". It was a song on one of SMH's free CDs. I always forget to buy the newspapers but luckily, that was the one day I remembered. That pretty much sent me on the great musical adventure I'm still on.
2. "Cinders". The bit from 2:31 wooed me.
3. I didn't like "All Coming Back" at all. I thought it sounded a little creepy. It's only since last year that I started to really enjoy it. I hadn't before realised how intense and (kind of) passive-aggressive it is.
4. "True Intentions" and "Remorse".
5. All time fave of this album is "Perfect Now". It's also my most favourite Sarah Blasko song.

Good idea for a thread :)

My answers are:
1. Don't U Eva - Someone mentioned Sarah on a forum I used to visit and decided to take a look at her site. I watched the video for Don't U Eva and remember being totally blown away. I've been hooked ever since.

2. Perfect Now - I remember receiving the album after waiting about 10 days for delivery to the UK from Australia. I loved the whole album, but the stand out track was definitely Perfect Now.

3. Not sure I have a song that fits this category. Maybe Cinders, but I still wouldn't say I love it now.

4. Quite a few, surprisingly. I don't like most of the songs on Prelusive. In fact the only two songs I like on it are Your Way and New Religion (which is awesome). However, I have to say I that I really don't like most of the songs she's covered, in particular Flame Trees which drives me up the wall.

5. I would still have to say Perfect Now, but I have a soft spot for Long Time, which she played at the request of Chris and I in Birmingham once :) Also The Garden's End.

1>The first song of Sarah's I heard was 'Your way' from her first EP. I am told that it may have even been the demo. A friend of mine was working as a producer for a Sydney label and that EP or the demos were doing the rounds when she was looking for a deal or a new deal. Anyway he left the CD in my car and I drove around Sydney listening to it for a while. There were other tracks on it. None of it really grabbed me. It was not until a while later when I saw the clip to 'Always worth it' that I realised that she had star potential and was very different to how I pictured her. I had imagined her as some white R&B wanna be popstar girl for some reason.

2> The first song I fell in love with was 'The Albatross". It so mature and different. It was that song that made me a huge fan rather than a casual one.

3> I think the whole first album could fit that bill. I didn't get it. I thought it was ok, but nothing really grabbed me. It is still not my favourite, but some tracks have really grown on me. Especially 'Beautiful secrets'

4> Don't like 'Sweet November' So many people rate it as their favourite, but it just doesn't do it for me. The Prelusive Ep, but I don't really regard that as Sarah Blasko if you know what I mean.

5> I think 'Night and Day' is my new favourite. I used to never pay attention to it when I first got the album. After hearing Sarah do it live at the Forum in Melbourne I was hooked. I went home and listened to many, many times.

1. What was the first song you've ever heard?
I wanna say it was Don't U Eva or something like that. I was channel surfing and saw a little live set on channel v, and went and looked her up on the internet straight away. I think this was only a month or so after Overture came out.

2. Which was the first song you absolutely fell in love with?
Beautiful Secrets, first song I listened too after seeing her on tv.

3. Which song did you first not like but it then totally grew on you?
All Coming back and Hold on My Heart. All Coming Back just clicked one day (I particularly enjoyed the way she did the vocals on one of the live versions I have), and now I really like it. Hold on my heart I didn't really like the style of, but when I heard it live a few months back it suddenly clicked as well.

4. Which song did you not like and still don't like?
I don't really dislike any of her songs too much, but there is 1 or 2 songs on Overture and Underscore I don't really listen to very often.

5. What's your all-time favourite song?
Beautiful Secrets. Also the one damn song I ain't heard her play live yet, much to my chagrin.

Hold on my heart was my least favourite. Seeing it live got me into it too.

Seeing an artist live is really important. You can never press skip on a live performance

Hi, I've been eavesdropping on this forum for a while, but this thread prompted me to join up. I discovered Sarah Blasko completely at random, & I've long wondered how other people got in on the secret!

1. What was the first song you've ever heard?

The guy who runs the Jolie Holland Appreciation Group on Facebook (sorry, but I'm a fb addict!) sent me a link to a video of Jolie - a singer I've admired for a while now - playing a live session for Undercover.com.au. I clicked on a few other videos, thinking 'Oh look there's a whole Australian music scene I know NOTHING about', and to be honest I didn't think I'd discovered very much. Then, a few days later, I realised that I was being absolutely haunted by a song I'd heard sung by a young woman with a guy on guitar, so I went back & found it again. It was Sarah singing 'Always on the this line' with (I guess) Robert Cranny. Unfortunately that video isn't online any more.

2. Which was the first song you absolutely fell in love with?

Honours are divided between 'Always on this line', 'Don't U Eva' and 'Amazing things' - after my eureka moment, I listened to a lot of songs, mostly on youtube, in a short space of time, but these stood out.

3. Which song did you first not like but it then totally grew on you?

'Woman by the well'. I just didn't get it until I saw the 'Shoot the Player' video, and suddenly felt the quiet intensity of it.

4. Which song did you not like and still don't like?

There are still some from the early records that I've never realy warmed to. 'For You' seems to go nowhere & takes a long time about it. What am I missing?

5. What's your all-time favourite song?

That's easy: 'We Won't Run'. Absolute masterpiece.

Great thread. :) I've enjoyed reading the others' responses.

1. What was the first song you've ever heard?
I think that was 'Always Worth It'. I want to say I overheard her when she was performing at an o-week or uni bar, all the way back in 2005, but perhaps I'm hallucinating it? In any case, I only became interested in her a few weeks later, as the sounds were stuck in my mind.

2. Which was the first song you absolutely fell in love with?
'Sweet November'. It's a strange thing, but what first captured my attention was the description of the seasons. I grew to love it later on for other reasons too.

3. Which song did you first not like but it then totally grew on you?
Probably 'Sweet Surrender'. I do like the Prelusive EP well enough nowadays, though it doesn't rank as highly as her albums for me.

4. Which song did you not like and still don't like?
Really, really don't like the 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' cover, though I couldn't say why.

5. What's your all-time favourite song?
'Amazing Things'. It's stood out to me ever since I've first heard it. I think its appeal lies in the lyrics, and it sounds wonderful live.

1 - The first song I heard from Sarah was "Don't U Eva" back when they used to flog it on the radio before the album came out. I remember someone on JJJ made the call that it was going to be their favourite album of the year, even though it wasn't released yet. Fair call, it was pretty great.
2 - Even though nobody else on here seems to like it, I thought Sweet Surrender was awesome as soon as I heard it. Loved it then, and love it now.
3 - Didn't really like Remorse originally, thought it was OK, really like it now.
4 - I guess there's a couple of songs I like less than most - I guess some of the slower ones - Woman By The Well, For You, but I think maybe she shouldn't really do as many covers. Never like them as much as her own stuff. In all honesty, I haven't listened to the second disc of the new album yet because I don't wanna dislike it.
5 - I'm not too sure about an all time fave, I'd maybe say Sweet Surrender, but probably Sleeper Awake off the newie... Not quite sure why... Having said that, I probably get new fav. songs pretty often, especially every time an album comes out.

1. dont u eva i think. back in the day. They used to play the video a fair bit on max.
2. Always Worth It. I remember downloading it and playing it over and over and over. It made my insides feel good. Then I bought the album. Then I joined up to the old version of this place.
3. Showstopper. I used to skip it. now i love it.
4. Hold On My Heart. Just can't get into it.
5. Probably Perfect Now. It's kind of perfect I guess...
I used to have a signature but now i'm not so sure.
